While the standard professions of cleric, fighter, magic-user, and thief do cover a lot of ground, the introduction of general skills, weapon mastery, and certain class-specific abilities allow for a great deal of class customisation. This article explains how to create your own classes, using any race and a variety of abiltiies, all without unbalancing your campaign.
Creating New Classes
Our system of new class creation uses a system whereby individual class abilities are given corresponding XP costs. The enterprising DM or player may simply assign abilities to the class as desired, tally the XP cost, and arrive at a base XP value for the new class. This value is, in turn, the foundation for the class' level advancement table. As expected, the more abilties a class has at its disposal, the more XP required to earn experience levels.
The system described above was organised in an article titled, "Building the Perfect Class," and has been submitted to the OD&DITIES netzine for publication. Until such time, the piece is presented in PDF format here. In addition, we have created a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel format to automate the calculations described.
| New Class Tools | Description | Size | ||

Building the Perfect Class | Creating new and balanced OD&D classes | 95.9 kb | |

As demonstrated in the article, building new and balanced classes for any OD&D campaign is a relatively simple matter. All new classes for use within The Trid Campaign were developed using the procedure explained in the piece.
